Probiotics and Weight Loss
Share
Today, nearly 40% of Americans are obese or overweight. The problem is people are so desperate to shed stubborn fat, they waste their hard-earned money on diet pills, fad diets, and other weight loss gimmicks that simply do not work. Plus, medications come with the risk of dangerous side effects.
Probiotics may provide a much easier and safer solution to weight control. They are beginning to show promise for people to lose weight safely and naturally, while also lowering your body weight parentage.
Research shows that Probiotics can help you lose weight by balancing your gut bacteria. Washington University School of Medicine Center for Genome Sciences conducted a study, and discovered that people with normal weight had different gut bacteria than those who are obese or overweight.
Hundreds of microorganisms live in the gut, and studies show that overweight people have less diverse bacteria in their digestive system than lean individuals. And interestingly, those people with less diverse gut bacteria also put on weight easier than those with more diverse gut bacteria.
So they decided to conduct animal studies to investigate this further -- and they found that changing the bacterial balance in a microbiome does indeed lead to weight loss. For example, when gut bacteria from obese mice were transplanted into lean mice, the lean mice became overweight or even obese!
Probiotics may be useful in fighting obesity in other ways, such as...
- Some probiotics can slow the absorption of dietary fat, so more is excreted with feces. So the body obtains less calories from food, and people would put on less weight.
- Research shows that certain probiotics can release the appetite-reducing hormones glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY). When these hormones are increased, they may help you lose fat and burn more calories.
- Probiotics have been shown to increase levels of the protein angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4), which leads to less fat storage in the body.
Since scientists have found a link between widespread inflammation and obesity, improving the health of your gut lining can reduce systemic inflammation. Probiotics help to strengthen the digestive tract, along with the gut lining.
Other studies discovered that specific strains of the Lactobacillus family can help you shed stubborn fat and lose weight. In one study, eating yogurt with Lactobacillus fermentum or Lactobacillus amylovorus reduced body fat by 3–4% over 6 weeks. Another study of 125 overweight people investigated the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosussupplements on weight loss. Women in the group who took the probiotics lost 50% more weight over 3 months, compared with those taking a placebo pill. Those also experienced significant decreases in both body fat mass and waist circumference.
This group continued to shed pounds during the weight maintenance phase of the study.
Probiotics May Prevent Weight Gain
While losing weight is the way most people overcome obesity, probiotics have been shown to prevent unwanted weight gain from even happening.
A study had participants eating a diet that added 1,000 additional calories than their bodies needed each day. The people who took probiotics put on less weight, even though they didn't notice any changes in their metabolism or insulin sensitivity.
This is great news for those who trying to control their weight. This research shows that certain probiotic strains can prevent weight and fat gain, even if you're eating a high calorie diet.
